MARQUETTE — The Marquette Board of Light and Power was recently named the recipient of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 5 “Excellence in Sulfur Dioxide Control” award for 1989. The award was presented for exemplary operation of a dry flue gas desulfurization system at the board’s Shiras Generating Station, Unit 3. The unit, which began operation in 1983, is subject to Clean Air Act emission standards. During 1989, it maintained a 100 percent compliance with the applicable sulfur dioxide emission limitations. The BLP is the first utility in Michigan to receive the award. The award presentation was made by David Kee, director of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 5 Air and Radiation Division. Others at the award presentation were Louis Krolikowski, BLP environmental biologist; Edwin Puuska, BLP production superintendent; James Smith, board chairman; Lee David Dennis, assistant regional director of the Michigan DNR; and David Johns, BLP auxiliary operator at the Shiras Steam Plant.

MARQUETTE — Weather conditions may force the temporary closing of the Mt. Mesnard municipal ski area, City Recreation Director James C. Engle reported this morning. Engle said he had inspected the hill this morning and that about six to twelve inches of snow is required to put the hill in good shape. Saturday afternoon city crews had to bring in some snow to cover up some bare spots on the bottom of the hill. “Our attendance has been very good,” Engle said, “despite the adverse skiing conditions.” Skiing at Mt. Mesnard is permitted four days a week. There is no charge for the use of the tow. Supervisor at the hill is Mrs. Althea (Scotty) Rossi, who is on duty at all hours that the area is open for skiing. “If we do have to close the hill, it will only be until we get more snow,” Engle said.
