Multi-vehicle crash in Michigamme Township leaves 1 dead

MICHIGAMME — A 20-year-old woman died from injuries suffered in a Saturday accident in Michigamme Township.

Michigan State Police reported that at about 6 p.m. Saturday, troopers from the MSP Negaunee Post and deputies from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to a multi-vehicle traffic accident on U.S. 41 near marker 102 in Michigamme Township.

The investigation determined that a red 2005 Pontiac Aztek driven by a 20-year-old female from downstate Fenton and her 19-year-old female passenger from downstate Brighton were westbound on U.S. 41 when the driver lost control of her vehicle and collided with two eastbound vehicles.

The driver of the Aztek, confirmed by Michigan Tech University as an MTU student, suffered fatal injuries. The passenger was transported to UP Health System-Marquette for treatment of serious injuries. Two other injured motorists were transported to UPHS-Bell for treatment of their injuries.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.

MSP Negaunee troopers were assisted at the scene by Anttila’s Towing, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, UP Health Systems East and West, Michigamme/Spur first responders, Marquette County 131, Michigamme Fire, Champion Fire and the Marquette County Road Commission.
