MARQUETTE — Monday night’s Marquette City Commission meeting was a historic one.
Commissioners Fred Stonehouse, Jessica Hanley and Cody Mayer were sworn in after garnering the three highest vote totals in last week’s general election.
Stonehouse was re-elected to a second consecutive term while Hanley joins female commissioners Jenn Hill, Jenna Smith and Sally Davis, making the commission a female majority for the first time ever.
Mayer, a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, also becomes the first Native American resident of Marquette to be elected to the commission, and is the second-youngest person to be elected to the commission behind current commissioner Evan Bonsall.
Commissioners serve three-year terms and are not allowed to serve more than two consecutive terms.
The commission voted 5-2 to re-elect Smith as mayor of Marquette for a second year, while Hill also won a second term as mayor pro tem in another 5-2 tally.
The commission also approved the 2021 city commission meeting schedule.
