MARQUETTE — The Marquette City Commission is expected to award a bid tonight for construction of a bicycle path through the Lower Harbor Park. The low bid out of five was for $53,480, submitted by C. Oberstar Construction of Marquette. Also bidding were Associated Constructors of Marquette, $54,910; A. Lindberg and Sons of Ishpeming, $57,866; Paul Smith Landscaping of Marquette, $70,538; and Quality Concrete of Marquette, $71,550. The city has received a $30,000 state Coastal Zone Management grant for the project, which was originally estimated to cost $60,000. Completion is expected by June 30. The new bike path will start at the foot of East Ridge Street and connect to an existing path that starts at Presque Isle.

MARQUETTE — Additional needs at the city animal shelter off County Road 550 were reported by John Thornton, city dog warden, at the Marquette Health Council meeting last week. Thornton said separate kennels are required for the dogs at the animal shelter to prevent fighting among the animals. At present he said, the city has three cages and he believes there should be a minimum of 15 cages. Should the dog population increase, he said, the city will need 30 cages. A pickup truck will be made available to the dog wardens as soon as new trucks are provided for the light and power department. Thornton began his duties as dog warden earlier this month. He is empowered to impound any dog running at-large and to act as a deputy police officer. He may collect fees for the care of dogs and can provide for their disposal under terms of the city’s dog control ordinance.
