MARQUETTE — Students wanting cigarettes must now go off campus to buy them. As of June 30, all cigarette vending machines have been removed. “We’ve taken the action to be in compliance with an ordinance enacted recently by the Marquette County Board of Commissioners which prohibits cigarette vending machines in public places which aren’t monitored,” said Michael J. Connelly, associate director of Food Services. “The law requires that we monitor vending machines so that they aren’t being used by minors. We can’t do that, so we’ve taken them out.” Connelly said 13 machines were removed.

MUNISING — A K.I. Sawyer helicopter sent here from the Marquette County air base Saturday night to look for a Bay City man and his 13-year-old son, who disappeared while fishing in Lake Superior, was not needed after all. Charles Boussum and his son, Charles Edward, were back on the mainland, safe and sound, by the time the helicopter reached Munising. The pair were caught in Saturday’s storm while fishing from their motorboat in Murray’s Bay at Grand Island. When the storm struck, a second party of fisherman tried to reach the Boussum boat but was unable to do so. They returned to Munising at about 9 p.m. and told state police the Boussum craft had disappeared from view and they believed it was in trouble. The coast guard, on request of the state police, sent out a search party but could not find the Boussum boat. Returning to Munising, the Coast Guard notified K.I. Sawyer at 11:30 and asked air base personnel to dispatch the helicopter. In the meantime, Boussum had managed to beach his boat on Grand Island and walked with his son to the residence of John Lezotte. Lezotte brought the father and son back to Munising in a tug. The pair was wet but none the worse for wear, police said.
