ESCANABA — Great Lakes Airlines has stepped in to replace another route being dropped by American Eagle. The Iowa-based airline on Monday announced it would start service Sept. 9 out of Delta County Airport in the eastern Upper Peninsula. That’s the same date American Eagle plans to stop service. Great Lakes has scheduled three daily flights from Delta County to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The airline also plans to take over American Eagle flights out of the Pellston airport in northern Lower Peninsula.

ROSS LAKE — Ishpeming Boy Scouts, enjoying their annual outing at Camp Min-ne-ya-ta on Ross lake, distinguished themselves as forest fire fighters Wednesday afternoon when they won a fight against a blaze which threatened to reach the Sedgwick and other cottages at Island lake, a short distance from Ross lake. The Scouts had finished dinner when the fire was sighted and from the “Y” camp it appeared as if the entire district might be burned. Camp Directors F. B. Rathman and Leonard Egstrom organized the Scouts into brigades. They took 30 extra mattresses and hastened to the scene of the blaze. The mattresses were soaked with water from Island Lake and used to combat the fire nearest the camp. After the mattresses were laid the Scouts formed a bucket brigade and kept them soaked. The fire was beaten out around the camp and the Scouts worked until it burned itself out. The youngsters enjoyed their experience and their opportunity to do a good deed. Some of the boys suffered from smoke sickness after the fire, but all were in good shape for the evening meal in camp. The camp mattresses used to fight the flames were damaged so badly that they will be of no further use. The cottagers at Island Lake appreciate the work done by the Scouts and camp leaders.
