HOUGHTON — Tourist Park is actually a misnomer, City Manager George T. Meholick Jr. asserted at this week’s city commission meeting in the city hall. Meholick’s comments were made when Mayor James R. Smith noted some complaints had been made about facilities at Tourist Park by travelers. “This is not a tourist park as such, anymore than any of the other parks here are.” Meholick said. “The name should be changed so that it wouldn’t be misunderstood as a tourist park.” Leonard G. McKie, parks superintendent, said the name is misleading and that he suggested the name be changed to Pine Grove Park or Red Pine Park, because of the predominance of red pine in the area. McKie also pointed out that the park is located outside the city limits, and that the city did not intend the park to be used for overnight camping. Mayor Smith said he felt the best solution would be to hold a meeting with the City Health Council and City Planning Board to explain the situation and decide what should be done. Meholick said he did not feel the establishment of a tourist overnight stopping place should be a city function.
