Apparent drowning on Ned Lake subject of investigation

L’ANSE — A 71-year-old man’s body was recovered from Ned Lake in Baraga County after an apparent drowning on Monday, according to a press release from the Michigan State Police Calumet post.

Troopers had responded to the apparent drowning on Ned Lake in Spurr Township of Baraga County around 2 p.m. Monday.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, Gary Stroud, 71, of Amasa, “apparently fell into the lake and drowned while tending to his boat that was moored near hte lake shore,” police said in the press release.

Stroud was recovered from the water and confirmed to be deceased, according to the release. He was then transported to Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

The incident remains under investigation at this time. Police ask anyone who may have information about the incident to contact the Michigan State Police Calumet post at 906-337-5145 or submit a tip through the Michigan State Police mobile app.

Michigan State Police troopers were assisted by Bay Ambulance, conservation officers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and first responders from Covington Township and Michigamme/Spurr Township.
