Man charged with home invasion

MARQUETTE — A man was arrested by Marquette City Police and lodged in the Marquette County Jail on Tuesday on a charge of home invasion-first degree.

The Marquette Police Department said that about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Alger Street regarding an assault complaint. Through an investigation, it was learned that the suspect, Jared Roy Smith, 24, of Marquette, allegedly entered the home without permission and assaulted a 93-year-old victim with his walking cane. The suspect then fled the area.

A short time later, the officers located the suspect with the victim’s cane in his possession.

Additional charges are to be sought, including felonious assault.

The victim was transported to Upper Peninsula Health System-Marquette for treatment of his injuries. The full extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.

No arraignment date has been set.
