Fundraising walk goes virtual

MARQUETTE — The team of four sisters and their mom behind Walk in the Park for Brain Tumor Research in Escanaba aren’t letting a pandemic stop their fundraising and community-building for those affected by brain tumor diagnoses.

The walk will be held on the day originally planned, but in different places all over the country, practicing social distancing.

The McInnis family, who started the walk after Don McInnis lost his battle with a brain tumor 16 years ago, have been holding the walk ever since, and later joined forces with the Anderson family in memory of Sue Anderson.

This year, funds are being raised via T-shirt purchases through June 8 at goodink.com/walkinthepark. Those who don’t want a T-shirt are encouraged to donate through the walk website at eskywalkinthepark.com.

Organizers have put out the challenge to sell 250 shirts before the fundraiser ends on Monday. High quality shirts in multiple colors for toddlers through adults are available at $20-25. T-shirts will be shipped in time to wear and walk #togetherapart on the planned date of June 27. All proceeds benefit the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center through the Superior Health Foundation. So far, the walk has contributed over $85,000 to research, and the family would like to see that number hit $90,000 this year.

Walkers are encouraged to take photos of their walks on June 27 wearing their T-shirts, and post them along with their stories to the Esky Walk in the Park Facebook page at facebook.com/EskyWalk, to keep the community aspect strong. Stories of loss, challenge, and hope have always been the biggest part of the walk, and organizers would like to see that continue to grow.
