MARQUETTE — A group of 40 volunteers will help those in need, older adults and frontline workers, with winter cleanup by raking yards and also grocery delivery this morning and afternoon around the city of Marquette.

United Way of Marquette County will be coordinating its Day of Service program, which is a volunteer opportunity for individuals who want to lend a hand to those who need services. Day of Service began as a giving back initiative when many individuals reached out to United Way when the pandemic hit as several requests from the senior community extended their needs for winter cleanup, executive director Andrew Rickauer said.

The plan is to do more days like this to create a greater network of volunteers, Rickauer said, adding that this effort won’t cease when the coronavirus comes to a halt. Some seniors still need support throughout the summer, including lawn maintenance and grocery delivery, so launching this day of volunteering will continue with future projects, he added.

“… The need is there in the community and (we) have people ready to fill the need so let’s spread the word to try to get more people onboard and really help take care of the community. So that’s what the Day of Service is kind of highlighting the whole project,” he said.

Over the last few weeks, United Way has conducted a half dozen projects, including raking yards and preparing meals for the Janzen House, Rickauer said.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, people’s busy lives didn’t always permit opportunity to volunteer but now that the world has slowed down, people have more time on their hands and this is a chance to look out for one another, he said.

Today’s Day of Service will entail two shifts from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“I’m just really looking forward to getting all of these volunteers more involved and making a positive impact in the community, knowing those people that have signed up with the need, showing them that the community is here and cares for them and is here to help support them and lend a hand,” he said, adding, “I think it’s great people work together for the greater good.”
