Child missing in Erwin located

MARQUETTE — A 4-year-old who went missing Tuesday afternoon from a campsite in Erwin Township was located and returned to his mother.

At approximately 1 p.m. Tuesday, a report was received by central dispatch of a child missing from a campsite near McDonald’s Dam, in Erwin Township, according to a press release from the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office. The child’s mother reported that her son was playing with other children nearby and possibly wandered off.

Gogebic County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and were assisted by troopers from the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post. Gogebic County Search & Rescue also responded to the scene, organized a team and began to search the area.

A deputy utilizing an ATV located the child in the dense woods approximately 1.5 miles away. The child was returned to the campsite where he was evaluated by Beacon Ambulance personnel and returned to his mother.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by Gogebic County Search & Rescue, Michigan State Police Wakefield Post, Michigan State Police K-9 Calumet Post and Beacon Ambulance.
