MARQUETTE — Paramedic Dan Wolf was selected to receive this year’s Earlene Kinnunen emergency medical services meritorious service award. The award is presented annually by the Marquette County EMS medical control authority to an individual who has displayed excellence in the delivery of patient care and who has demonstrated dedication to improving emergency medical service in the community. In presenting the award, county EMS medical director Dr. Richard Tomacari cited Wolf’s exceptional care of emergency patients and his many contributions to the local EMS system. In addition to his duties as the EMS field coordinator for the U.P. EMS Corp., Wolf is an active instructor for many local emergency medical services training courses. Wolf has been a member of the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department emergency rescue unit for 12 years and has received several citations. He is also employed as a part-time paramedic for Marquette General Hospital’s EMS department. Wolf, his wife Carrie, and their two children, Eric and Jeffrey, reside in Marquette.

ISHPEMING — K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base has been assigned an H-43B “Huskie” helicopter, which will be located at the base mainly for crash and rescue operations. Another helicopter of this type will be stationed at the base in the future, according to information services office officials. The aircraft also is equipped for firefighting, having a special apparatus designed for landing in areas near a fire. It uses carbon dioxide, dry chemicals, or foam to smother flames. It also has two litter baskets for moving disabled persons. When the special equipment is not in use, the helicopter can carry six passengers, the pilot, and co-pilot. Lt. Earle D. Williams, Sawyers, pilots the aircraft, and it is expected three other persons will be “checked out” to fly the helicopter. The Huskie established a new world’s altitude record for helicopters at more than 30,000 feet in December 1959. It is turbine helicopter powered by a Lycoming T-53, 825 horsepower engine.
