One dead after L’Anse house fire

L’ANSE — A man was pronounced dead after being rescued from a house fire in L’Anse Wednesday morning.

At approximately 9:35 a.m., Negaunee Regional Dispatch received a call reporting a structure fire at a residence on North Fourth Street in the Village of L’Anse, a press release from the L’Anse Police Department states.

The department, L’Anse Fire Department, Baraga County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, Baraga Police Department and Bay ambulance responded to the call. Upon arrival, officers found the home to be engulfed in flames at the front of the residence. Officers were able to gain entry through the back door where a male victim was located on the floor near the door. The victim was unresponsive and was taken out of the residence where lifesaving measures were given by officers. Bay Ambulance arrived and continued life saving efforts. The man was transported to Baraga County Memorial Hospital where the 57-year-old male victim was pronounced dead.

The victims’identification is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

The Michigan State Police Fire Division was contacted and is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire at this time.
