Lost hikers found safe

MARQUETTE — Two teenagers were rescued from Sugarloaf Mountain in Marquette Township on Tuesday.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office reported that at about 8 p.m. that day deputies, along with the county’s Search and Rescue team, were dispatched to Sugarloaf Mountain to look for two host hikers.

Cameron Mason, 19, of Ishpeming and Kylie Hetrick, 19, of Negaunee hiked to the top of Sugarloaf, but when they tried to make their way back to the parking lot, they tried to find another way down instead of using the stairs, which were ice-covered and slippery.

The hikers then became lost and called 911 for assistance. Search and Rescue located both and guided them to the parking lot.

Deputies were assisted by Search and Rescue as well as Marquette Township Fire and EMS.
