Dog still missing after Sunday ice rescue

MARQUETTE — The Marquette City Police Department has issued an update on an ice rescue that took place on Sunday afternoon.

At about 1 p.m. Sunday, Marquette police officers were dispatched to the area of the Carp River near U.S. 41 South in reference to a subject who had fallen through the ice and into the water.

Upon arrival, they discovered a 51-year-old woman from Marquette was located in chest-deep water and unable to get out on her own.

Officers used a water-rescue flotation device to pull the woman from the water. The woman said her dog also had fallen in the water and was missing.

A search was conducted for the dog, but it was not found, police said.

The rescued woman wrote a Facebook post, asking anyone who fishes on the Carp River in the area of the Jeep Trail to the river mouth to look for her dog Bowie. She believes the dog might be trapped under the ice and could be found in the shallows as the ice melts. The dog has his tags, so she requested people call the phone number listed on the tags so the dog can be put to rest.

Assistant city fire crews at the scene were the Marquette Fire Department, UPHS-Marquette EMS, the Chocolay Township Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard and Marquette County Rescue 131.
