ISHPEMING–The NICE school board wants to know the public’s perception of its school district. The board voted unanimously to have a public opinion poll taken to discover how the public feels about the way the district’s money and business are being handled and the quality of its education. Superintendent William Hyry said the information may be used to decide whether to ask district residents to renew a 3-mill allocation voters had approved in 1988 for one year. He said the board will hear a proposal Jan. 9 from Marmen Computers of Menominee on what specific questions to ask. The board will then decide whether to award the firm a contract. Regardless of who conducts the poll, the board is committed to seeing one done, said board President Robert Menard. “It will be broad, but it won’t be long. It will cover a great range of issues,” Menard said. Hyry said the cost of the poll has not yet been determined and could hinge on other West End districts joining a single poll.

ISHPEMING–William S. Pierce, Ishpeming district manager of the Upper Peninsula Power Co., will serve as 1960 Michigan Week chairman for Marquette County. His appointment was announced today by Lincoln B. Frazier, Marquette, president of Campbell Supply Co. and regional chairman for the 15-county Upper Peninsula area. In accepting the county chairmanship, Pierce stated that the Michigan Week program in Marquette County will be more intensive than ever before. “Our goal is to have every individual and group actively participating in all of the events planned for the seven days,” he said. Planning for the 1960 Michigan Week is already far advanced, according to T. Austin Saunders, Muskegon, president of the General Telephone Co. of Michigan and state chairman for the seventh annual observance to be held next May 15-21. “Michigan–Your Opportunity,” the suggestion of a 15-year-old Lansing newspaper carrier, will be the slogan for the celebration. The theme for special emphasis will be “People of Michigan.”
