HARVEY–“The Holidays are going to be a lot nicer this year for the Hoskings,” said Ray Hoskings of Harvey after winning the $50,000 top prize on the “Fame and Fortune” state lottery TV game show taped Friday night and aired Saturday night. Hoskings still plans to give half the money he won after taxes to his parents, put some of the rest in a college fund for his five children, and hasn’t yet decided on what he’ll do with the remainder. “Maybe my girlfriend and I will take a trip to Cancun,” he said Saturday night after returning from the show’s taping in Detroit. “I told my mom and dad I would give them half of the money if I won because my mom had to help me write my name on the back of my tickets. I had broken a bone in my hand while roller skating and couldn’t write my name in the small space provided,” Hoskings told a reporter in Detroit following the taping. Hoskings had a one in six chance of winning the $50,000 top prize in the game, which comes down to $37,000 after taxes. He is a data processor at the Tilden Mine in Ishpeming who does not play the lottery regularly.

TRENARY–A 24-point fourth quarter rally gave Trenary’s Comets a 63-62 victory over a strong Garden basketball team, in Class “E” clash Tuesday night. It was the home team’s fifth victory in six starts, and Garden’s second loss (the other was at National Mine) in seven games. It was a close ball game most of the way as the well-matched foes (even their enrollments are almost identical) battled it out. Trenary led 13-12 at the quarter, 26-24 at the half, but trailed 39-45 after three periods. With two of the Gardeners fouling out, Coach Ronald Dahms’ team overcame the six-point deficit to win.
