Man arrested on 74 felony counts

MARQUETTE — A 49-year-old man was arrested in Forsyth Township on a 74-count felony warrant that included dozens of counts of child sexually abusive activity.

The man, identified by police as former Marquette resident Edward James Charboneau, was arrested on 35 counts of child sexually abusive activity, two counts of child sexually abusive material – aggravated possession, and 37 counts of using a computer to commit a crime, according to the Marquette City Police Department.

The warrants, which hold a total required bond of $740,000, were authorized by the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office, police said.

The warrants were issued after a “lengthy investigation initially reported as embezzlement from a local organization,” police said. During the investigation into the embezzlement case, digital devices were seized and “the suspected child sexually abusive materials were found on the devices,” a press release states.

Charboneau was arrested at a Forsyth Township residence along Eagle Street around 4:30 p.m. Thursday without incident, police said. He was unable to post bond and is currently lodged at the Marquette County Jail as he awaits arraignment, according to officials.

The Marquette City Police Department was assisted by the Forsyth Township Police Department and the Michigan State Police Computer Crimes Unit.
