Local League of Women Voters to hold town halls

MARQUETTE — The League of Women Voters of Michigan, Marquette County Member-At-Large State Unit, will hold “Making Democracy Work” town hall style meetings at three locations in Marquette County: Negaunee Township Hall at 7 p.m. Wednesday; at the Citizens’ Forum Room at Lakeview Arena in Marquette at noon Thursday; and, in partnership with Northern Michigan University’s Political Science Department, on the NMU campus in Jamrich Hall room 1318 at 7 p.m. Thursday.

At each of the venues, the presenters will cover Michigan’s new voting rights, resulting from passage of Proposal 3; the Citizens Redistricting Commission, created by Proposal 2 to end gerrymandering; and the 2020 census.

“The League of Women Voters is pleased to present educational information on the implementation of these two proposals which amended the Michigan Constitution and the 2020 census,” Darlene Allen, chairperson of the local LWV, said in a news release. “This presentation will allow voters to learn more about how the proposals are being implemented in 2019 and beyond. The 2020 census is right around the corner and the League of Women Voters wants to make sure everyone in Michigan is counted.”

The presentation will include a discussion of the 2020 census, why all should participate and how it will be conducted; the Citizens Redistricting Commission, how it will be selected and function; Michigan’s new voting rights, early voting and expanded voter registration.

Marquette County Clerk Linda Talsma will join league presenters at each of the town halls to share a local perspective on the implementation of Michigan’s new voting rights.

These events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Darlene Allen at 906-225-9103 or dthomsona@gmail.com.

The town halls are made possible by a grant from the League of Women Voters Education Fund.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization whose mission is to empower voters and defend democracy, according to its press release.
