ISHPEMING–The Ishpeming City Council approved a watered down version of an ordinance prohibiting the sale of pollution-causing food packaging on city property. The ordinance as adopted prohibits the serving of food packaging containing chlorofluorocarbons, which are thought to deplete the ozone layer surrounding the planet. The council approved the first reading of the ordinance Aug. 23 with only Councilman Daryl Champion voting no. But at Wednesday’s meeting, Mayor Angelo Bosio said the prohibition of non-biodegradables went too far because alternatives were not available. Champion agreed, saying the ordinance would hurt non-profit organizations that use city property. Champion suggested the council simply stop using the substances in city business. “We can lead the way by example rather than lead the way with another ordinance,” he said. The amended ordinance passed 4-1 with Champion dissenting.

Plans for the future, says LaCombe, include “just taking it easy.” Mr. and Mrs. LaCombe, who live at 1209 High St., have one daughter, Mrs. Roy (Barbara) Lemin of Ishpeming.
