MARQUETTE — It’s hard to please everyone when you’re cooking for thousands, but the Northern Michigan University Food Service keeps trying with new menu items. New menus are written every May for the following year, said food service director Richard Wittman. Added this year will be poached egg on an English muffin, Texas chili, bacon cheeseburger, porcupine meatballs, prime rib for Sunday dinner and beef fajitas. A new cafeteria feature will be hot breakfast on weekends as well as during the week. A continental breakfast of cereal, donuts, and toast was served in the past. Another addition to the food service budget will be a special steak dinner in the Charcoal Room of the University Center for all residence hall students with meal plans. Houses will have input on the menu, from what kind of steak should be served to which dessert.

MARQUETTE — W. Arthur Zerbel retires from the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad Co. accounting department Monday following 56 years of employment, one of the longest tenures of service with the company. On March 3, 1903, Zerbel went to work for the railroad company as an office boy and came through the ranks in various capacities, including chief clerk and assistant auditor, to the post he retires from this month — assistant to the president, to which he was elevated in 1953. He will be 72 years old on Sept. 6. His plans for the future include “keeping active and enjoying doing the things I have always wanted to do, and didn’t have time for.” He and his wife, Lenore, also plan to spend some time at their cottage at Mangum. Zerbel was born in Marquette in 1887 and has lived here his entire life. Mr. and Mrs. Zerbel have two children, John of Milwaukee and William of South Bend, Ind.
