CHRISTMAS — Next winter, these poles will shed a little light on Alger County’s first illuminated ski trail. Michigan Youth Conservation Corps workers — Jack Charlebois, 19, of Chatham; Kevin Ryan, 19, of Wetmore; and Daniel Maki, 18, of Chatham — worked on the second light pole in the series, which was raised last Thursday at Bay Furnace Campground. The 2-mile trail starts at the campground in Christmas and is a cooperative venture joining the U.S. Forest Service, the state Department of Labor, Jerry and Pat’s Party Store and the Christmas Civic Organization. Dorothy Knuttila of Christmas donated heavy equipment for trail construction, the Superior Ski Club financed one light, and an anonymous donor contributed $2,400 toward the remaining fixtures.

MARQUETTE — Purchase of a new street sweeper from the Hunter Tractor & Machinery Co. of Milwaukee was authorized by the Marquette City Commission this week. Under terms of the agreement, the city will “rent” the machine for a period of three years, during which time it has the option to buy. The new sweeper holds twice as much as the old Austin-Weston unit, which is 10 years old. During the spring cleanup, V.E. (Ed) Swan, public works superintendent, noted that two shifts had to be used on the sand pickup and cleanup. With two machines, the crews can work simultaneously in different sections of the city.
