Calling all kids

Fishing derby promises fun for the whole family

MARQUETTE — Fish, food and fun is what the Humboldt Township Children’s Fishing Derby is all about.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday for kids 16 and under at the Humboldt Township Pond across from the township hall on Marquette County Road FN, said Tom Prophet, Humboldt Township supervisor.

Prophet said he was serving on the township planning commission when he got the idea.

“We had this little park, and we put some bridges on the pond, and we thought, ‘What can we do to get people to use this?’ So we stocked it with fish, and decided to try it,” Prophet said. “It was my idea, but the planning commission should get all the credit. They pulled it off.”

And the success has carried over year after year. Prophet said 159 children registered during the 2018 event.

“It’s been real popular, so we keep it going,” Prophet said. “The last few years it’s been our volunteer fire department. They have done a great job.”

It’s a great day of entertainment for families at no cost, Prophet said.

“Everything is free. We will have hot dogs, hamburgers, bratwurst and pop,” he said. “We want it to be a fun, memorable event for the kids, so every one of them gets a prize, whether they catch a fish or not.”

The event is being held in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Free Fishing Weekend, Prophet said.
