Northern students help the community

The Northern Michigan University Hip Hop Dance Crew and Marquette Ending Hunger Adviser and Zumba instructor Mark Shevy, center, perform on stage for the recent Dance4Food Zumbathon Charity Event. The event aimed to raise awareness about poverty and hunger in the Marquette area. To enter the event, attendees brought canned goods which will be donated to various community organizations such as the Salvation Army. The event draws attention to homelessness and poverty in the U.P. and helps to combat it, explained soon-to-be president of Marquette Ending Hunger Valeta Gage.“I think it’s great because the whole community comes together,” Gage said. “It’s not just college students, I see community members from all around, so it’s nice to see people come in and bring it and even if they can’t bring a canned food it still gets the message out that it’s dance for food. It’s raising awareness of the issue of hunger in the community.” For more information visit Marquette Ending Hunger on Facebook. (Journal photo by Trinity Carey)
