Marquette Township Board to consider SEMCO request

MARQUETTE– The Marquette Township Board will consider a SEMCO Energy Gas Co. request for additional easements along the route of a natural gas pipeline at its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Marquette Township Hall.

The board approved an initial 40-foot-wide easement consisting of 1.27 acres lying north of the Carp River in Marquette Township and a 1.11-acre section of temporary and extra work space, with total compensation to the township of $1,800, during a meeting in June 2018.

The section is part of the proposed 43-mile long Marquette Connector Pipeline which would connect the Great Lakes Gas Transmission system near Arnold with the Northern Natural Gas system to the north in Marquette.

SEMCO is asking for an additonal seven-tenths of an acre to increase its temporary workspace along the current easement, and is proposing $500 in additional compensation to the township in return.

According to an email from Steigerwaldt Land Services specialist Ferron Fisher to Marquette Township Attorney Roger Zappa the easement would likely require the removal of some additional timber and brush, but “everything will be restored to prevent erosion.”

The work should not interfere with any previously scheduled races that would travel through the area, the email states.

The Marquette Connector Pipeline will consist of two segments: A 20-inch diameter line would run 36.2 miles from Arnold to Negaunee Township, near the M-35 and Marquette County Road 480 intersection; and a second 6.4-mile, 10-inch line will connect the 20-inch line in Negaunee Township to the company’s existing distribution system in the city of Marquette.
