Grass fire occurs after accident

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP — A grass fire occurred after a two-car accident on U.S. 41 South near the Welcome Center Wednesday, according to the Chocolay Township Police.

The accident occurred around 4:21 p.m., when two vehicles were northbound on U.S. 41 and a white car attempted to merge into the right lane from the passing lane, striking a red truck that was northbound in the right lane.

The white car “lost control and careened left across all five lanes of traffic,” leaving the roadway and striking a guide wire from an electric pole, according to the Chocolay Township Police. The wire then contacted the power lines, resulting in a grass fire. The white car continued and “finally stopped after striking several trees,” police said.

Both drivers were checked on scene by UP Health System EMS.

The Chocolay Township Police are currently investigating the incident and are asking “anyone who saw the accident or anything prior to the accident” to call the department at 906-249-4040.

The Chocolay Township Police Department was assisted by UPHS EMS, Chocolay Township Fire and Rescue and the Marquette.
