NEGAUNEE — A “weather-head” is someone who lives and breathes the discipline of meteorology, the science that deals with the atmosphere, especially with weather forecasting. Both aptly define WLUC TV-6’s Karl Bohnak, who came to the Upper Peninsula a year ago from a top television station in Milwaukee. The area and the chance to “run his own show” drew him north. “Up here, weather is a lot more than predicting when people can plan for picnics,” Bohnak said. “Weather in this neck of the woods, especially during the winter months, can mean the difference between life and death.” Modern meteorology is both an art and a science focused on an array of computers and weather satellite hook-ups available in the TV-6 weather room at the studios near the Marquette County Airport. Preparation for the 6 and 11 p.m. weather segments takes hours and is subject to any number of snafus. “I like to keep a pretty close eye on the (AP) wire because they’re plugged in directly with the National Weather Service systems,” Bohnak said. Viewers have become accustomed to pictures or graphic images depicting the weather, since Karl has taken over at TV-6.

MARQUETTE — Jane Bemis is the first woman profiled in The Mining Journal’s “Profiles: Women in the Public Eye” the first of a series of articles on women in this area who are active in the fields of education, business, health, government and other aspects of public affairs. If home economics majors at Northern Michigan College fail to become good homemakers, it won’t be the fault of Dr. Jane S. Bemis, their professor. With 21 years of teaching experience and a myriad of contributions to more effective programs affecting family well-being to her credit, charming, blue-eyed Dr. Bemis is an expert in her field. A vast wealth of knowledge under her professional hat is thus passed on to her students. Dr. Bemis lives with her 90-year-old mother on E. Arch St.
