MARQUETTE — Two people were pronounced dead at the scene of a two-snowmobile accident in Alger County around 9:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Alger County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived at the scene of the crash on Trail No. 8, around 1 mile north of Samuelson Road in Rock River Township, they discovered two snowmobiles had been involved in a head-on collision. Both operators had been ejected from their snowmobiles.

Excessive speed is thought to be the cause of the accident, police said. The investigation remains ongoing and the names of the victims are being withheld until proper notifications can be made, police said this morning.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office, Alger County EMS, Alger County Rescue 21, Rock River Fire Department, Rock River First Responders and Valley Med were dispatched to the scene, police said.
