One cited in Shiras Hills accident

MARQUETTE — One person has been cited in relation to the head-on collision around 3:30 p.m. Sunday near Shiras Hills in Marquette that led to a man being extricated from his vehicle with the jaws of life.

A 2003 Ford Ranger pickup truck, driven by Elizabeth Schut, 56, of Deerton was traveling south on U.S. 41 when she lost control of her vehicle on the slippery roadway, crossing over into the northbound traffic lanes, police said.

Schut’s vehicle then collided head-on with a northbound Chevrolet SUV driven by Lance Beckman, 23, of Gwinn.

Beckman was extricated from his vehicle with the jaws of life. All occupants of both vehicles involved in the crash were transported to UP Health System by ambulance for non-life threatening injuries, according to police. Schut was found at fault in the accident and cited for violation of the basic speed law — driving too fast for conditions.

The Marquette Police Department was assisted on scene by the Marquette Fire Department, UP Health System Emergency Medical Services, the Chocolay Township Police Department, and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.
