Women arraigned on false report

MARQUETTE — Two women have charged with filing a false police report and were recently arraigned in Mackinac County, with the charges stemming from a false report the women filed in June regarding sexual assault, according to the Michigan State Police.

The charges stem from a June 6 report the women filed with the Michigan State Police St. Ignance Post that they were sexually assaulted on Mackinac Island, police said.

The Michigan State Police and the Mackinac Island Police Department then began investigating the allegations, utilizing detectives, undercover officers, polygraph examiners, crime lab personnel, medical personnel, the canine team, a forensic artist and federal authorities. The investigation revealed the two women, both 23 and of South Africa, had filed a false police report.

The two women, Zinhle Xaba and Bongiwe Mjali, both 23 and from the Republic of South Africa, were arraigned Wednesday in the 92nd District Court. Each faces a charge of filing a false police report, which is a felony. Both women had been working on Mackinac Island under a J1 Student Visa, police said.
