ST. IGNACE — The Michigan State Police St. Ignace Post is investigating a one-vehicle fatal traffic accident that took place early Saturday morning in Clark Township.

Police said it responded at 3:29 am. to the accident, which occurred on Three Mile Road north of Nye Road. A Hyundai Accent with two occupants was traveling southbound on Three Mile Road when it left the roadway and went into the shoulder.

The vehicle then returned to the roadway and overturned several times, ejecting a male occupant. The female occupant escaped the wreckage before the vehicle caught fire.

Both occupants were transported to War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. The male later was transported to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital where he died Monday as a result of his injuries. The female later was released from War Memorial.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident.

Michigan State Police troopers were assisted at the scene by the Clark Township Fire Department and Clark Township EMS.
