Superiorland Yesterdays

30 years ago

MARQUETTE — Toni Heikkinen and Lorrie Stanaway are connected both as friends and artists. Their joint exhibit, “Connecting Lives,” will open Tuesday at Oasis Gallery in Marquette and run through Aug. 6. Heikkinen, an Ishpeming metalsmith, and Stanaway, a Marquette painter, are showing multimedia works. Stanaway is a graphic artist for the Screened Image and holds a master of art education degree. Heikkinen is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in metalsmithing. A limited edition of wearable art will be on sale during the exhibit.

60 years ago

MICHIGAMME — More than 40 children have a spot in the garden plot in the project sponsored by the American Legion of Michigamme, growing all kinds of vegetables and even some flowers for home consumption and decorations. The auxiliary, No. 339, has dubbed the project a community child-welfare garden project. The land for the garden is located in the town and is donated by Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Luke. Co-chair
