NEGAUNEE — Preliminary work has begun on a project to reconstruct a portion of Croix Street from Baldwin Avenue to U.S. 41.

The $662,000 project, will be paid for using $499,915 in federal Surface Transportation Priorities funds and $129,828 in federal earmark repurposed funds.

The city will be responsible for providing $32,458 toward the project, which will come out of its street millage fund, City Manager Nate Heffron said.

The street millage, which was passed in 2015 has accumulated $199,661, according to a recent communication to Negaunee residents.

Signage for the work, which is expected to begin at the Baldwin/Croix Street intersection, was posted on June 18.

According to the City of Negaunee website, phase one of the construction will be the Baldwin intersection — working westerly on the 400 block of Croix.

The work is anticipated to last approximately five weeks, the site states, with Baldwin Avenue open to traffic.

Phase two of the project will be the east end of Croix from Baldwin to U.S. 41 and is expected to be completed on Sept. 22.

“As with most construction work in residential areas, this project will cause you some inconveniences,” the site states.

Officials warn of possible dust and noise issues and the potential reduced access on-street parking during the project.

“The city will work with the contractor to keep these inconveniences to a minimum,” Heffron said.

Any Negaunee residents with questions about the Croix Street construction project are urged to contact the Negaunee Public Works Warehouse at 475-9991.
