MARQUETTE — About 80 firefighters continued today to battle a wildfire near Sugarloaf Mountain that has consumed 25 acres of woods. The fire, in its fourth day after being sparked by lightning Sunday night, was 40 to 50 percent contained as of 10 a.m., said Jim Gray, Michigan Department of Natural Resources fire boss at the scene. DNR firefighters were reinforced by 15 people from the Ottawa National Forest this morning, with hopes that the fire could be contained by this evening.

NEGAUNEE — When the Negaunee City Band presents the first concert in its 1958 summer series at the municipal band shell, it will mark the beginning of the 60th year for what is probably the Upper Peninsula’s oldest music organization. Formed in 1896, the city band was an outgrowth of a brass band organized in 1890 by the English Oak Lodge and consisted of Cornish residents in the city who played brass instruments.
