NEGAUNEE — Generations of fathers gathered Sunday for “Iron, Steel and the Automobile,” the 29th annual antique automobile exhibit at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee.

The event featured over 40 cars from 1900 to 1969 including Ford Model T’s and Model A’s, Chevrolet Corvettes and more.

“We fell into a niche to host it on Father’s Day. It’s a good family-oriented event,” said museum historian Barry James.

The vintage cars transported David Whaley of Gwinn back to his childhood and to his fondest memories of his father, he said.

“It’s an era. My father used to have old cars and rebuild them when I was a kid, which was 72 years ago,” Whaley said. “He had a big farm and big barns. He just filled them up with old cars. I learned a lot about them in those years.”

A 1923 Hudson Super Six Sedan was among the cars on display at the event. Sedan owner and Marquette local Jorma Lankinen has had the car for over 20 years and restored it to its original condition. He displays his car at the event to add some fun to Father’s Day, he said.

“It adds camaraderie and closeness and fun things to do in a beautiful place,” he said.
