Arbor Day planting set for Friday

MARQUETTE — The city of Marquette will be hosting its 38th annual Arbor Day planting at 10 a.m. Friday in the Father Marquette Park at North Front Street and Baraga Avenue.

A shagbark hickory, funded by a grant from the American Transmission Co., will be the first tree planted in the newly renovated park, which will be dedicated at 2 p.m. July 15 followed by a community-wide celebration at 3 p.m. on the boardwalk below the Hampton Inn.

Paul Albert, city of Marquette arborist, is orchestrating the planting and will be assisted by members of the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The committee played an important role many years ago advocating for a full-time city arborist and Marquette has consistently been awarded the designation of Tree City USA due to the arborist’s diligence and expertise, a press release states. Members of the community are invited to attend the planting.
