MARQUETTE — Persons interested in saving Dandelion Cottage from demolition can attend a meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium of Peter White Public Library. The cottage — the centerpiece of the 1904 children’s classic “Dandelion Cottage” by Carroll Watson Rankin — is being sold by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for $1. The buyer of the structure, a small one-story house on East Arch Street in Marquette, will be responsible for moving the building. Support for saving the structure, which is scheduled to be torn down to make room for expansion of St. Paul’s Church, has been received from many areas of the country. Historical facts about the structure, as well as possible sites and uses for the building and moving costs, will be presented at the meeting. For more information on the cottage or the meeting to discuss its fate, call Barb Kelly.

MARQUETTE — City officials are working with the Marquette County Humane Society to set up a proposed city animal shelter, said City Manager George T. Mebolic Jr. County officials employed a dog warden until about 1950, but they now leave it up to the city. City patrolmen are now called when there is a complaint involving a dog. “This is hardly a satisfactory arrangement,” Mebolic pointed out, “because it means the patrol cars must be cleaned every time a dog has been picked up. Dogs are kept in kennels behind the city hall in the substation and this, too, causes a nuisance because of inadequate space and noise. The city now plans to furnish land north of County Road 550, near the Dead River, in the vicinity of the diesel plant for the shelter.
