NEGAUNEE — Top administrators of five area school districts which plan to conduct millage elections on April 26, met Wednesday to discuss strategies for informing the public about their district’s financial conditions. The meeting was attended by Superintendents Don Mourand of Negaunee, Richard Hendra of Ishpeming, Charles Osborn of Gwinn, Roy Green of NICE and Grant Berggren of Republic-Michigamme. Districts seeking operational millage increases include Gwinn, NICE and Republic-Michigamme. Ishpeming is asking for a millage renewal, while Negaunee seeks a combined millage package containing a renewal and an increase.

ISHPEMING — One of this city’s most famous ex-residents received acclaim in the Chicago Sun Times “Parade” magazine. Dr. Glenn Seaborg, one of the top scientists in the nation, was pictured in a full cover photo on the front page. He was introduced as “a scientist you should know.” Dr. Seaborg was born in Ishpeming. In 1951, Dr. Seaborg shared the Nobel Prize for chemistry. He is co-discoverer of the important fissionable isotopes uranium 233 and plutonium 239, which made the first atomic bombs possible.
