MARQUETTE — Lori Manzer and Libby Voskuhl, student nurses studying community health at Northern Michigan University, brought a special health education project to the second graders in Ann Arthur’s class at Bishop Baraga School recently. They read a story about good and bad germs, and led hand washing activities with the students. “Hand washing is accepted as the number one procedure for preventing the spread of infectious disease,” said Diane Zajdel, advisor to the nursing group. To help students retain the message, Manzer said they “will be giving the students a handout to take home to remind them to wash their hands.” Manzer and Voskuhl are senior level students doing projects in the schools as part of their practicum.

REPUBLIC — A problem not uncommon in the state and nation is becoming increasingly serious for the school districts of this area. It is, briefly, to build or not to build; to consolidate or not to consolidate. A briefing of the problem was provided by Superintendent Walter McClintock. The Republic Mining Co. (in effect, the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., since it owns a large part of the stock) wants the Republic school district to move its 52-year-old building so it can continue to expand open-pit mining operations. “The company,” as it is referred to by local persons, has offered the school district $220,000 for the present building. That is about what an appraiser said the building was worth. Plans drawn up by the school district to rebuild are estimated at $800,000.
