MBRC annual Spring Cleanup set for Saturday

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Beautification & Restoration Committee Inc. invites Marquette residents to participate in its annual Spring Cleanup Saturday.

Participants are asked to meet from 10 a.m. to noon at Classic Auto Collision, 1305 S. Front St., Marquette, to get safety vests and trash bags.

Over 40 individuals, groups and service clubs have been assigned to remove litter from public spaces within the city limits.

“We encourage everyone to rake, repair and tidy up their property,” Shan Marlette, MBRC Spring Clean-up chairwoman, said in a news release.

This year’s sponsors are Heritage Motors and McDonald’s, plus the event has the support of the city of Marquette.

“Our city continues to win awards and visitors always comment on how clean and beautiful it is,” Marlette said.

The MBRC was established in 1978 as a nonprofit volunteer organization. Its members share the goal of enhancing the city’s appearance.

The organization’s projects include the annual Petunia Pandemonium, with flowers planted along South Front Street, a main corridor to the city. In 2017, more than 23,000 flowers were planted.

An ongoing project for the MBRC is the restoration of the Father Marquette statue, located at Father Marquette Park along South Front Street. Project funds will restore and preserve the bronze monument, enhance and help maintain the park, and make it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

A garden dedicated to the MBRC’s former president, Tami Dawidowski, who was instrumental in the project, will be established in her memory.
