Missing child located by K-9 unit

RUDYARD — A missing child was located on Friday in Chippewa County with the help of a Michigan State Police K-9 unit.

At about 7:45 p.m. Friday, troopers from the MSP Sault Ste. Marie Post were dispatched to a residence in Rudyard Township on a report of a missing 11-year-old child.

The child was reported as being autistic and wearing only a shirt and pants with no jacket. The parents said the child had walked away from the residence and could not be located in the area, which consisted of woods and fields.

Troopers, assisted by the K-9 unit, responded and began searching the area for the child while United States Border Patrol units and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources searched area roads.

The MSP Aviation Unit also was contacted and used a helicopter to assist in the search.

At about 10:30 p.m., the K-9 located the child in a hunting cabin about a mile from his residence. The child, while being cold, otherwise was in good health.

He was returned to his parents and evaluated by Kinross EMS. No medical treatment was sought.
