PORTAGE CANAL — The body of a Hancock man reported missing in November was found in the Portage Canal Sunday afternoon.

Duane Kangas, 38, had been missing since Nov. 7, when he was seen leaving a gas station in Houghton in his car.

Kangas had been found near the Houghton Waterfront Park, said his grandfather, Louis Chandonais. His body was taken to UP Health System-Portage hospital, where he was identified, according to the Houghton Daily Mining Gazette.

In addition to police efforts, friends and family had kept up the search since Kangas’s disappearance. They created a Facebook page with information and a GoFundMe page to create a reward for information.

“Of course we don’t like it, but it’s finally closure after seven months of not knowing where he was,” Chandonais said.
