MARQUETTE — Jilbert Dairy Inc. was honored Saturday with the Marquette Ambassadors 1987 Small Business of the Year Award. The award, presented during the annual Marquette Area Chamber of Commerce dinner and dance, is given to business owners demonstrating a number of characteristics including business growth, increased sales, response to adversity, community-mindedness and demonstrated initiative. Ambassadors leader, Mike Skytta, presented the award to John and Karen Jilbert. It comes on the 50th anniversary of the family-run business, which now employs 45 persons and has seven distributors.

60 years ago

GWINN — Glenn Oien, Gwinn, has been promoted from sergeant to lieutenant in the Marquette State Prison custodial force, Warden Raymond J. Buchkoe announced. A native of Gwinn, Lt. Oien succeeds William Bath, who is retiring as supervisor in charge of the prison’s honor camp. Lt. Oien, who attended Northern Michigan College, joined the prison force in April 1940 and has held prison positions ever since, except for a period during World War II.
