NMU issues ‘date rape’ drugs alert as precautionary measure

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University recently sent out an alert about the possible use of “date rape” drugs on and near campus.

The alert was sent as a warning and a precaution because of two separate conversations that came to the attention of the NMU Police Department, said Derek Hall, chief marketing officer at NMU, in an email.

“There were no events reported that led to the email being sent,” Hall said. “This was a precautionary communication with the goal of protecting our students.”

This is the alert’s text:

“NMU PD has been made aware of the possible use of ‘date rape’ drugs on and around campus.

“Use extreme caution if you are attending any social gathering.”

The alert provided these safety tips:

– Use the buddy system.

– Only take refreshments from those you trust.

– Do not leave your refreshments unattended.

– If you think someone is at risk, get involved. Don’t wait for someone else to help.

– Keep yourself safe.

– Don’t be aggressive or use violence.

– Get help from other bystanders, if necessary.

– Call the police if needed.

– Call 911 if you are in immediate danger.

Anyone having any information on the distribution of illegal drugs is asked to contact the NMU Police Department at 906-227-2151.

Individuals may also make a report to the anonymous tip line at www.nmu.edu/publicsafety/crime-tips-1
