IHS Winter Carnival under way

ISHPEMING — With the advent of the Punxsutawney Groundhog’s prediction of more winter to come Ishpeming High School decided to hold its second annual Winter Carnival today through Thursday.

The theme this year is Olympic Games, according to a release from the school. The events planned will range from outdoor survival training to scavenger hunts with government instructor Holly Letson.

“The winter carnival is a great relief after the pressure of exams,” said Kelsey Routhier, a senior.

Students find themselves taking a break from the strain of state testing and the rigorous curriculum by also participating in events like snowshoeing, snowball softball, pickleball, broomball, ice sculptures and algebra on ice. Additionally. Principal Seth Hoopingarner organized field trips for seniors to attend Escape Marquette and Ishpeming’s History Museum.

The variety of activities provide opportunities for each student to try something new and bond with faculty and peers.

English and French educators Corey Stiles and Melissa Meldrum will be taking students snowboarding at Marquette Mountain, snowshoeing and archery lessons. Last year ,Meldrum accompanied students to Al Quaal’s Tubing Run. Students will attend this activity again this year with Jane Stewart and Robert Fox. Fox is not shy of the winter temperatures concerning his recent Noque Ski Marathon finish.

The excitement doesn’t just occur outside either. Double Trouble DJs will be again hosting a larping extravaganza in Ishpeming’s new gymnasium.

“Double Trouble DJ’s larping adventure was a unique way to team build with peers,” said sophomore Berkli Asgard.

Double Trouble DJs and other local businesses offer their premier services in support of Hematite Nation. This year should be a fantastic carnival leading up to the U.P. 200 Sled Dog races Friday night, according to the release. All students have Friday off due to professional development for faculty.
