‘Michigan Medical Marihuana 101’

MARQUETTE — Shelly Edgerton, director of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs will present “Michigan Medical Marihuana 101” at Northern Michigan University. Her talk is scheduled at 5 p.m. Feb. 7 in 2904 West Science. It is open to the public.

LARA oversees the state’s medical cannabis regulations. Edgerton is expected to address the history of medical cannabis in Michigan. She also will provide an overview of regulatory revisions underway, including the regulated licensing of large-scale growing operations, dispensaries, testing labs, processing facilities and secure transportation services. Prior to joining LARA, she served the state legislature for 27 years, most recently as deputy senate majority counsel in the Senate Majority Policy Office.

Edgerton is the inaugural speaker for the NMU medicinal plant chemistry program’s lecture series. The seminars will feature experts from all areas of the industry, including regulation and law, manufacturing and production, laboratory analysis, research and development and marketing/communication.

West End Winter Wonderland event

ISHPEMING — The Greater Ishpeming-Negaunee Area Chamber of Commerce presents the second annual West End Winter Wonderland fundraiser event, to take place from 5-8 p.m. Saturday.

Guests may snowshoe, ski, or snow bike along the trails. Walking without snowshoes is not permitted. If you do not own snowshoes, Wilderness Sports has donated the use of snowshoes at Wawonowin Country Club for the duration of the event on a first-come, first-serve basis.

West End Winter Wonderland will feature a self-guided tour around the front nine of the Wawonowin Country Club, 3432 County Road 478, Champion, on a groomed, lit, snowy path. Chamber member businesses will be stationed along the path to provide guests with appetizers, drinks, and games. As a business, there is no fee associated with being a part of this event, and GINCC is still seeking out more chamber members that would like to be involved. Businesses currently signed up to be a station: Wawonowin Country Club; Gauthier Insurance; UP Health Systems- Bell; Mama Mia’s Italian Restaurant; Brogie’s Tavern; Cognition Brewing Co. & RAMBA; TV6 and FOX UP; Wells Fargo: Western Marquette County Health Foundation; and GINCC.

Registration, reduced in price from last year, is $20 for adult; $10 for student or senior (62 and older; and $5 per child ages 15 and under. Registration includes: groomed and lit trails, appetizers and drinks, games, and a commemorative headlamp. All proceeds benefit GINCC.

Bike path maintenance suspended

MARQUETTE — The bike path along Lakeshore Boulevard, from Mattson Park through Founders Landing to South Beach, is not being maintained due to the upcoming U.P. 200 Sled Dog races.

Maintenance of the bike path will resume on Feb. 20.

Free Fishing Weekend Feb. 17-18

MARQUETTE — Grab a fishing rod and enjoy Michigan fishing during the 2018 Winter Free Fishing Weekend Feb. 17-18. On those two days, everyone — residents and non-residents alike — can fish without a license, though all other fishing regulations still apply.

In addition, during #MiFreeFishingWeekend, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will waive the regular Recreation Passport entry fee that grants vehicle access to Michigan’s 103 state parks and recreation areas. Several locations also may host official 2018 Winter Free Fishing Weekend events.
