Police investigating assault

MARQUETTE — The Ishpeming Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in finding Chloe Jazmin Shumate, a person of interest in a serious assault case.

The assault occurred at the Wonderland Motel on Palms Avenue in Ishpeming around 7 a.m. Sunday, according to a press release from the police department.

Shumate, 22, fled before officers arrived at the scene, police said. The 36-year-old victim of the assault was taken to UP Health System-Bell for treatment of her injuries, the release states.

The Ishpeming Police Department was assisted by Michigan State Police K-9 Unit, the Negaunee Police Department and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

The Michigan State Police K-9 Unit attempted to track Shumate, but was unsuccessful. As of this morning, Ishpeming police had no further updates on Shumate’s location.
