WASHINGTON — A $296 billion Pentagon spending bill awaiting President Reagan’s signature drew mixed reviews from one Michigan lawmaker, but contains good news for some of the state’s defense facilities, another legislator said. The legislation approved Thursday appropriates $16 million for new construction at Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Wurtsmith Air Force Base near Oscoda. At Sawyer, $1.5 million is pegged for a new day-care center, $840,000 for a KC-135 simulator support facility and $690,000 for a T-9 noise suppressor support facility, said Mark Ruge, chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Robert Davis, R-Gaylord.

MARQUETTE — Installation of a 300-foot sanitary sewer on Lake Shore Boulevard between Michigan and Ohio streets was expected to be completed Nov. 21, according to V.E. “Ed” Swan, superintendent of the city public works department. The sewer, 30 inches in diameter, replaces one originally installed in 1912. The old sewer collapsed and caved in on Labor Day morning following a heavy rainfall.
