Peter White library closed Friday

MARQUETTE — The Peter White Public Library in Marquette will be closed Friday for staff development training.

The Marquette Arts and Culture Center, located in the lower level of the library, will be available only by appointment or by calling 906-228-0472.

The library and MACC will resume normal business hours on Saturday.

Compost site closing for season

MARQUETTE — The city of Marquette’s compost drop-off site, located at the former Cliffs-Dow site along Lakeshore Boulevard, will close for the season Sunday.

The site will be open for the final time this year from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Project ELF talk rescheduled

MARQUETTE — Because of the forecast for inclement weather, tonight’s Project ELF talk at Northern Michigan University has been rescheduled for next Thursday, Nov. 16.

NMU’s Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center will host a free presentation titled “Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative and Project ELF.” The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Beaumier Center, located at the corner of Seventh Street and Lee Drive in Gries Hall at NMU. It is being held in conjunction with the “Cold War in the U.P.” exhibit.

Finlandia University history professor William Knoblauch will give the presentation. He researches and writes about Cold War politics and culture. He recently released “Nuclear Freeze in a Cold War,” his first monograph. It focuses on the Reagan administration, cultural activism and the end of the arms race.

Admission to the “Cold War in the U.P.” exhibit is free and hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

County Road 601 closed today

MARQUETTE — County Road 601 in Republic Township, about 1.7 miles south of County Road 478, will be closed today between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. for a culvert replacement, according to press release issued Wednesday by Marquette County Road Commission.
